Experience an interactive classical concert with The Discovery Orchestra

George Marriner Maull leading The Discovery Orchestra.

To help combat the feeling of tediousness while social distancing, many performers have found ways to still get their art-forms out through different platforms, but only a few have found ways to make their events interactive as well.

Philadelphia native Maestro George Marriner Maull and The Discovery Orchestra have found a way to do just that while on their mission to entertain and bring classical music to everyone. Their latest TV program, ‘Discover The Firebird,’ is an interactive concert experience that invites home audiences to join in on the fun as they learn about classical music offering ways to both be creatively engaged and entertained.

According to a release, ‘Discover The Firebird’ will have its premiere on New Jersey public television’s NJTV for audiences in Philadelphia, New York and New Jersey on Wednesday, April 29, at 8 p.m. ET (with an encore airing May 1, at 2 a.m. ET). It will also be distributed by American Public Television to public television stations across the nation in May, including some in the Pennsylvania area like Pittsburgh’s WQED and WPSU in University Park.

Maull will bring Philly flair to the concert having grown up in the city and having attended St. Peter’s Choir School and Abraham Lincoln High School. Maull, who still is in touch with his high school music teacher, is hoping to bring his own love of classical music to audiences to help inspire their own admiration for the art-form, and making the concert interactive will be the first step in kickstarting that mission.

‘Discover The Firebird’ features Maull leading the 85-member orchestra in a one-hour teaching concert that was recorded last September in front of a live audience. The release states, as Igor Stravinsky’s iconic ‘Firebird Suite’ is explored, Maestro Maull liberally breaks the fourth wall, engaging the audience in an entertaining, interactive and playful lesson. Audiences at home are encouraged to follow along with a listening guide on the screen and join in as the concert audience answers Maull’s questions with physical and vocalized responses.

Maull has been leading The Discovery Orchestra for over three decades. The Orchestra has an impressive reputation under its belt already with an Emmy-nomination and receiving multiple Telly Awards. With this interactive concert with Maull however, the Discovery Orchestra will not only be providing a one-of-a-kind chance to be involved in an interactive classical experience, but also a way for viewers to escape just bit—which is vital right now.
