Father charged with murder in toddler’s death

A 24-year-old man has been charged with murder in the death of his 2-year-old son, who died on Friday, July 14.

According to police, Quadim Bass was arrested Monday and charged with murder following the death of his 2-year-old son, Bashir Mungin-Bass, who died after an incident in his home along the 1600 block of N. 57th Street, in West Philadelphia.

Law enforcement officials said Tuesday morning that Bass was arrested after an incident that occurred at about 1:10 p.m. on Friday, when officers responded to a call at Bass’ home after neighbors reported hearing someone screaming at the property.

Upon arrival, police said, they were met by Bass, who told officers he was playing video games when he “heard a thump” and realized his young son had fallen down a flight of stairs.

According to law enforcement officials, Bass told police that he found his son unresponsive and attempted to perform CPR on the boy until first responders arrived and transported the child to CHOP, where he was pronounced dead at about 2:16 p.m.

Police reported that the child’s cause of death was found to be “blunt trunk extremity trauma to the body.”

Bass was arrested Monday on charges of murder and endangering the welfare of a child.
