Shortly after a bag of trash hit a 6-month-old baby boy’s stroller on a SEPTA Market-Frankford Line train Tuesday night, his father was stabbed twice outside the 69th Street Terminal, police said.
Upper Darby Police Superintendent Michael Chitwood said Wednesday the 23-year-old father, who lives in Philadelphia, was riding on the Westbound train with his son, who was seated in a stroller, around 6:30 p.m. Tuesday night.
During the journey to the 69th Street stop 23-year-old Anthony Wollor, of the 200 block of Drexel Avenue in Lansdowne, inexplicably threw a paper bag full of trash that hit the baby’s stroller.
“Whether he did it intentionally or not I don’t know,” Chitwood said. “But then he continued to walk into another car.”
When the train pulls into the terminal, the father and son hopped off and met the man’s Upper Darby girlfriend, who is also the boy’s mother. Once outside the terminal, the Philadelphia man spotted Wollor.
“And he goes up to him and says, ‘Hey, what did you throw trash at my child for?” Chitwood said.
The two then started fighting in front of the baby and the baby’s mother. During the exchange, Wollor pulled out a knife and stabbed the father twice in the back. Chitwood described the knife as having a black handle and between a four and five inch blade.
During the scuffle a witness stepped in started hitting Wollor until he relented. Wollor then got up and fled.
The man’s girlfriend called 9-1-1, and a SEPTA police officer, who was at the station, heard the call and spotted Worrell crossing Market Street and took him down. Upper Darby Police took the Wollor into custody, and found the knife in his front pants pocket.
The father was taken to the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania where he is listed in critical, but stable, condition.
Regarding Wollor, Chitwood said “I think there may be some mental health issues there.”
SEPTA Spokesman Andrew Busch said police hasn’t asked for surveillance video of the trash-throwing incident, but Chitwood said police would request that video shortly.
Wollor is charged with attempted murder, aggravated assault, recklessly endangering another person, possession of an instrument of crime.
