Fire shuts down subway

NORTH PHILADELPHIA – Fire officials have yet to determine the source of a fire that shut down part of the Broad Street subway line and snarled rush hour traffic yesterday.

The fire was discovered in a small bag at the Girard station shortly after 2 p.m. Passengers were being shuttled between Walnut-Locust and Cecil B. Moore stations as of 5 p.m. Initial unconfirmed reports said the fire began as a lit backpack in a trash can.
