Flint trying to breathe life back into Dragons

It’s been a few years since Drexel has been relevant in the city’s college basketball landscape. This year, however, Bruiser Flint’s squad is winning meaningful games again.

The Dragons started off 6-1, with their only loss coming by six points at Rhode Island. And their first real test was at then-undefeated Louisville on Dec. 14. How did they respond? By shocking the Cardinals, 52-46.

“Our guys are just a little older,” said Flint. “Last year, all these guys were freshmen and sophomores. We’re still young, but that one year has made a huge difference.”

Last week, the Dragons needed to defeat Old Dominion at home — not only to get over .500 in league play, but to establish themselves as a Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) power.

They started the second half on a 21-3 run to establish a double-digit lead and then held on for a 62-57 win. But, just two days later, the Dragons lost to William & Mary, 80-66.

“If you’re gonna go to the [NCAA] tournament, you gotta win your league,” Flint said. “So in order for us to really think we have a chance, we gotta beat a team [like Old Dominion] that’s picked to win it.”
