The King Clancy Memorial Trophy will be presented to the player who “best exemplifies leadership qualities on and off the ice and has made a noteworthy humanitarian contribution in his community.”
A player from every NHL franchise nominates a candidate for the trophy. In 2022, the Philadelphia Flyers nominee is Scott Laughton.
Laughton, selected by the Flyers, fits the criteria:
The King Clancy Memorial Trophy was first presented in 1988 to honor Frank Clancy. Clancy was a beloved player, referee, coach, and manager who realized the dream of winning the Stanley Cup three times before his induction into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1958.
On Pride Night at the Wells Fargo Center, Laughton matched a $5,000 donation as a You Can Play ambassador from Flyers Charities, totaling $10,000.
You Can Play, in its mission statement, says they work “to ensure the safety and inclusion for all who participate in sports, including LGBTQ+ athletes, coaches, and fans.”
To whoever is the winner of the King Clancy Memorial Trophy, they’ll receive a $25,000 donation to the cause of their choice. The second and third place runner-ups will receive a $5,000 donation to the cause of their choice. No Flyers player has ever won the award. Pekka Rinne is the most recent winner.
