Flyers lock up Jake Voracek, Peter Laviolette may be next

It was more of a ripple than a splash, but an important ripple nonetheless.

A day after the Flyers lost out on the Shea Weber sweepstakes, the team signed Jakub Voracek to a four-year deal worth a reported $17 million. The 22-year-old forward scored a career-high 18 goals while recording 49 points in 78 games last season for the Orange and Black. Voracek asserted his dominance in the postseason, with 10 points in 11 playoff games.

“We are happy to have Jake under contract and look forward to him being a big part of our future,” said Flyers GM Paul Holmgren.

Holmgren also hinted that Voracek could see time on Claude Giroux’s line next year. Voracek, a native of the Czech Republic, was acquired by the Flyers last summer as part of the deal that sent Jeff Carter to Columbus. Obviously, the organization has a lot of confidence in its rising star.

“I am happy we agree on the terms of the deal, and very happy to be locked up by the Flyers for the next four years,” Voracek said.

Report: Lavs deal in works

The Flyers are looking to extend head coach Peter Laviolette’s contract, according to a report on CSNPhilly.com. The deal could be completed as soon as next week. His current contract expires at the end of the 2012-13 season.

The 47-year-old is one of the most respected coaches in the NHL. He led the Carolina Hurricanes to a Stanley Cup in 2006 and got to Game 6 of the Finals with the Flyers in 2010. He holds a record of 122-73-26 since taking the Flyers gig in December 2009.
