Flyers’ Michael Raffl gave teammates scare Saturday

There was a scary moment during the Flyers 3-2 shootout win on Saturday night over the Rangers. Forward Michael Raffl collapsed on the bench moments after accidentally skating into the elbow of a Rangers player.

Play was abruptly halted – the Rangers had just started a power play – as the players on the Flyers bench started yelling and banging their sticks on the boards to get the officials’ attention.

Flyers captain Claude Giroux, who was sitting next to Raffl, said his linemate passed out.

“It wasn’t a fun moment,” Giroux said. “The whole team was worried.”

The training and medical staff quickly attended to Raffl and led him up the tunnel to the locker room. Raffl did not return and the team released a statement that he had suffered an upper body injury. Following the game, GM Ron Hextall said Raffl was doing “fine” but did not elaborate any further.

“I just talked to him,” Hextall said. “Everything is as good as you can expect. … He’s actually cracking jokes.”

The forward’s status for Tuesday’s game against the Sabres is currently unknown.
