Foles getting first-team reps for Eagles

Chip Kelly hasn’t named Nick Foles his permanent starter, but Mike Vick doesn’t appear ready to return.

Kelly not set to name permanent starter

If you thought Chip Kelly would come out and name Nick Foles his permanent starting quarterback, then you haven’t been following the Eagles this season.

While the coach did admit that Foles would take the first-team reps this week — and that he still had no timeframe for Mike Vick’s return — he’s not ready to make a formal announcement regarding Foles. Kelly’s focused on the here and now.

“I think you can look at his short career in the last two or three weeks here to kind of see how quickly it can go from one week to the next week,” Kelly said, of Foles. “He went from NFC Player of the Week against Tampa Bay to not playing very well against the Cowboys to now coming back.

“He’s probably got a life full of lessons in the last three weeks. I don’t think that will affect him. That’s just not the type of guy he is. I don’t see that ever happening to Nick.”

Despite a pristine passer rating of 158.3 from Foles against Oakland, Kelly didn’t want to anoint him the savior. Nobody’s perfect, after all. However, Kelly praised his young signal-caller, especially for his ability to convert third-and-longs.

“Those are difficult down‑and‑distances to convert,” Kelly said. “And I think that was really kind of the key, especially early to keep us on the field and keep our offense going. But two big‑time plays, he played really, really well.”
