Four teenagers shot after attending vigil for friend

Four neighborhood teens were shot Saturday night after attending a vigil for a 16-year-old killed when a privately owned garbage truck struck him a day earlier. Sgt. Ray Evers, a department spokesman, said the shooting “had nothing to do with the vigil” in the 5800 block of Elwood Street.

The victims — identified only as a 14-year-old boy, two 15-year-old boys and a 15-year-old girl — were struck around 9 p.m. because they were close to someone targeted for an unrelated retaliation shooting, he said. All four were taken to Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia and listed in stable condition.

Police stopped several “persons of interest” getting into a car on nearby Wanamaker Street. Police were told the shooting was retaliation stemming from a May shooting on Grays Avenue.
