Occupied Philadelphia at the MoAR

The British are back in town, and they’re going to be occupying Philadelphia all weekend long with the Museum of the American Revolution. During the multi-day event (Occupied runs on both Nov. 5 and 6 beginning at 10 a.m.,) more than 50 costumed historical interpreters will be stationed at the Museum’s outdoor plaza and in the surrounding neighborhood to recreate when the British Army occupied Philadelphia in 1777-78, a release states. 

This family-friendly event will also feature guided walking tours, demonstrations, a special tour for kids, a “spy challenge”, and much more. Activities on the outdoor plaza are free and open to the public. Tickets for the guided walking tours and History Explorers meet-up however may be purchased in advance or on the day of the event.

5th Annual Sling N’ Squash Competition 

If you’re itching for a trip out of the city this weekend, Rehoboth Beach’s Big Chill Surf Cantina will be hosting its 5th Annual Sling N’ Squash Competition on Saturday, Nov. 12 from 1 to 5 p.m. The spirited event—formerly known as Big Chill’s Pumpkin Chuckin’—is a popular gourd throwing event that tests competitor’s strength.

As a release states, started in 2017 as a tribute to the Pumpkin Chunkin festival made famous by the Discovery Channel, the event is free to attend (21+ only) and benefits the Rehoboth Community Resource Center. There is a $30 registration fee for competitors (which can be found online) that includes access to a limited-edition T-shirt, with $15 being donated back to the charity partner. Cash prizes will be awarded to the winner with $500 for 1st place, $200 for 2nd place, and $100 for 3rd place. 

There are a few rules to the competition (which also can be found online,) and spectators can also indulge in a wide variety of food, beer, and cocktails as well as live music from DJ Magellan while there. Big Chill Surf Cantina is also hosting a canned food drive throughout the week, and guests are encouraged to bring a can to the event.

Bao & Bun Pop-Up at the Philadelphia Museum of Art

For this weekend only, Constellation Culinary Group will partner up with Chef Sam Chen of Bao & Bun Studio for a special pop-up available at the Philadelphia Museum of Art. The activation will run from Friday, Nov. 4 until Sunday, Nov. 6. As the release states, Chef Chen is the latest in the museum’s Chef-in-Residence series, which aims to promote a diverse mix of up-and-coming local chefs.

The pop-up will run on each of those dates from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., and will feature new Bao Bun menu items such as Mongolian Beef (boasting soy honey glaze, spicy shallot and cilantro), Pulled Pork (made with a hoisin glaze and coleslaw) and Black Truffle Tofu (featuring sauteed mushrooms and black truffle sauce.) Tickets to the museum are required ($25 per adult, or pay as you wish on Sundays.)

Philadelphia Veteran’s Day Parade

As the official website states, the 8th Annual Philadelphia Veterans Parade will be held on Sunday, Nov. 6 at noon. With more than 150 organizations involving over 7,000 participants and 30 Veteran Service Organizations, the parade begins at Juniper and Market Streets with a brigade of over 250 motorcyclists and continues heading east on Market Street and concluding at North 5th Street where the Veterans Festival will take place. Projected Exposures

The PL130 Gallery at PhotoLounge is showcasing a new exhibit titled ‘Projected Exposures.’ The family-run film processing, digitizing and printing lab always aims to highlight the photographers within our community, and this new exhibition showcases 13 of them.

As a release states, arranged in a printed group-critique format, the show asks viewers to ponder each photographer’s point of view. The exhibit is on view through Nov. 12, and an open house reception will take place this Friday, Nov. 4 from 6 to 9 p.m.
