‘Stone Soup’ at Magic Gardens

Philadelphia’s Magic Gardens has its own appeal, but the multi-dimensional experience space also rotates different art exhibits in its indoor galleries. Beginning March 28, the latest to hit the venue comes from multidisciplinary artist Eustace Mamba. Titled ‘Stone Soup: Works by Eustace Mamba’, the collection highlights Mamba’s innovative use of materials and concepts while delving into the complexities of identity, culture, and history.

As a release describes, Mamba’s work often merges visual elements that contrast historical figures and events from Black history with imagery of contemporary Black life, particularly as it unfolds in East Coast cities like Philadelphia and New York (where Mamba was born.) The exhibit will feature works from different mediums including painting, collage, street photography, and mixed-media installations, with an emphasis on sewing as a storytelling tool.

Additionally, there will also be a Pay-As-You-Wish Opening Reception on March 28 (6 to 9 p.m.) Additional info can be found online.

Kun Yang-Lin Dancers

The Kun-Yang Lin/Dancers (KYL/D) have already made a name for themselves as one of the country’s only Asian-American contemporary dance companies, but it’s the bold choreography and showmanship that keeps people coming back to their annual performances.

The dancers under Artistic Director Kun-Yang Lin’s zen-inspired guidance provide a showcase of new dances every year. Lin, a native of Taiwan, started the company here in Philly with the intent to create programs that focused on centering our chi, or “life force” in Mandarin. Through inspiration from Eastern philosophies along with contemporary dance, this critically acclaimed group has mixed the past with the present in a simply beautiful way for years.

In 2025, KYL/D will present ‘LUNA (月)/Dance, Myth, and Nature’ at the Mandell Theater on March 28 (7:30 p.m.) and 29 (2:30 and 7:30 p.m.) Tickets ($25) are available online.
