Fun things to safely do this Fourth of July weekend

Looking for some fun, unique and safe ways to spend your weekend? In the age of social distancing, Metro has you covered. A few Philly establishments have come up with inventive ways to still have fun this Fourth of July weekend while staying healthy.

Fourth of July at the MOAR

The Museum of the American Revolution has been hosting their own Fourth of July celebration since last Saturday, but Philadelphians still have plenty of time to join in on the free, interactive virtual experiences for all ages. According to the release, in light of recent events, the museum is really exploring what the Declaration of Independence’s promise of “equality” means for all people and are asking people to share how they are fulfilling the promise of liberty and equality in their own lives. Activities during the MOAR’s celebration that help highlight just that include scavenger hunts, quizzes and even ‘Hamilton’-related activities (in honor of the movie’s release on Disney+ on July 3.) Philadelphians can also check out the museum’s free virtual tour where they can go behind the scenes and explore all of the galleries that the Old City establishment has to offer without leaving the comfort of their own home. French Roast with U Street Comedy

In times such as these, it’s important to let loose—and why not do just that through a comedy roast? U Street Comedy has been organizing virtual Zoom comedy shows throughout the pandemic, and this Friday they will be hosting an Old-Fashioned French Roast. The event is a roast-style comedy show where audience members can get involved and submit their friend’s social media information along with an embarrassing story to sam@ustreat.com for a chance to have a shoutout. The Roast will be hosted by Franqi French, winner of Standup NBC, and Stephen Campbell from Insomniac Events, and the duo will also be joined by standup comedians from Comedy Central, Netflix, NBC and more. The event will take place July 3 at 9 p.m. through Zoom.

Virtual Tour & Beer Tasting: Ancient Alcohol

This Thursday, Philadelphians are in for a treat. From 8 to 9:30 p.m., participants can join in on a virtual tour and beer tasting hosted by the Penn Museum and Philly Loves Beer centered around uncovering the culture of drinking in the ancient world in conjunction with modern-day brewing techniques. Throughout the tour, Janelle Sadarananda, who has worked on archaeologist excavations in both Greece and Turkey will serve as the tour guide. Jason Perkins, Brewmaster at Allagash Brewing Company and Dr. Matthew Farber, Assistant Professor of Biology and Director of the Brewing Science Program at the University of the Sciences, will also be joining in on the tasting. Philadelphians can purchase the beers they need beforehand at a few locations around the city as coordinated by Philly Loves Beer from Bottle Bar East in Fishtown, Local 44 in West Philly, The Bottle Shop in South Philly and The Beer Yard in Wayne. Beer choices range from Yards, Troegs, Neshaminy Brewing, Dogfish and more. Tickets are $10, and more information can be found on the Penn Museum’s website.

PSPCA Two-Day Adoption Event

The Pennsylvania SPCA recently rescued 100 cats, and in doing so has reached what they call ‘catpacity.’ To help, the organization has decided to host an in-person adoption event to help find these furry friends a forever home at their Erie Avenue Headquarters this weekend on Friday and Sunday. The event on both days will take place from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. and for this particular weekend, those who do adopt will receive $30 off of the sum. All potential adopters are asked to complete the Pennsylvania SPCA’s adoption application on their mobile phones prior to entering, and more safety regulations will be followed to complete the adoption this weekend as well.
