Golden, Golden, Gone: Temple coach heads south

It was inevitable. Temple fans knew Al Golden wouldn’t be in North?Philly forever. But that inevitable day has finally arrived.

Golden has been hired as the new head coach of the Miami Hurricanes.

He will replace former Miami coach Randy Shannon, who was fired after a 7-5 season.

Golden, 41, has been the Owls head coach for the past five seasons. The year before he took over, Temple went 0-11. In his first year, the Owls were 1-11.

But he totally turned the program around from a national joke to a perennial MAC contender. He led Temple to its first bowl game in 30 years last season. The Owls finished the 2009 season with nine wins and lost to UCLA, 30-21, in the EagleBank Bowl.

This season, the Owls finished with eight wins but were not chosen for a bowl game.

Former Miami assistant coach Marc Trestman, UConn head coach Randy Edsall and Houston head coach Kevin Sumlin were all serious contenders for the job as well.

Golden will be introduced today in a news conference.
