Hit and run driver turns self in: Police

A man who killed a pedestrian in a car crash early Tuesday and fled turned himself in Wednesday morning, police said Wednesday.

John Cook, 35, from the 4800 block of Tackawanna Street, was charged with homicide by vehicleafter he turned himself in to police headquarters at8 a.m. Wednesday.

Cook was driving at a high rate of speed near Cottman and Bustleton avenues around 12:38 a.m. Tuesday when he struck 50-year-old Alejo Molina, who was thrown 120 feet and killed.

Molina, of the 6600 block of Souder Street, was either waiting under a metal SEPTA canopy for a bus or walking on the sidewalk of Bustleton Avenue when the accident occurred.

Cook’s black 2003 Lexus E-300 smashed the SEPTA bus shelter before it rammed into Molina, throwing himthrough the air and killing him.

According to police, Cook and another driver were spotted both gettingout of their vehicles to look at Molina laying on the ground. The other driver jumped back in their car and fled, whileCook fled on foot.

Molina was pronounced dead by medics at 12:46 a.m.

Cook faces charges of homicide by vehicle,involuntary manslaughter, causing an accident while not properly licensed and fleeing the scene of an accident.
