How an expired passport saved Matt Brown’s career

Former Temple football player Matt Brown is headed to the Tampa Bay Bucs — by way of Canada.

As much as we try to steer clear of stories reported by rival publications, this one is too good. We attempt to paraphrase the fortuitous tale of Matt Brown, via The Philadelphia Inquirer.

Former Temple running back Matt Brown was on his way to Canada. He was set to join the Saskatchewan Roughriders, of the Canadian Football League. But, when he dug in his pocket and retrieved an expired passport, he couldn’t board the plane.

That was Tuesday. On Wednesday, he returned to Philadelphia to get a new passport, when his phone rang. His agent informed him that the Tampa Bay Buccaneers wanted to sign him to an NFL contract.

Brown’s small, accidental oversight turned out to be a big, big stroke of good luck — and potentially fortune. Did he actually get a new passport? It’s unclear as he took the next flight down to Florida to start his NFL career.
