Infant’s death leads to murder charges for Delaware parents

Police in Delaware have arrested the parents of an infant who died from injuries sustained while in their care.

The infant, Aiden R. Hundley, died in September after five months on life support in critical condition, suffering from multiple broken bones and a serious head injury at DuPont Children’s Hospital, the Delaware State Police reported in an online statement. An autopsy concluded that the death was a homicide due to blunt force trauma.

Doyle J. Hundley, 37, and Casey R. Layton, 28, the parents of the child, had originally claimed that he was suffering from a seizure and became unresponsive, but further investigation revealed that the infant suffered numerous injuries that occurred during the two months he was with his parents, the State Police added.

Hundley and Layton were arrested at their Harbeson, Delaware, home on Thursday, facing charges of murder and endangering the welfare of a child, the police reported, adding that they are currently being held on $106,000 bail.

They were unable to explain how the child sustained his injuries.

The couple’s other son, a 2-year-old, did not appear to be harmed and was placed with the Delaware Department of Services for Children, Youth and their Families, the State Police added.
