Interactive US Open coming to Independence Mall

The U.S. Open is jus two weeks away. Get ready, Philadephia!

OK, now that everyone is hyped up, we bring you this public service announcement.

The USGA is introducing a special, interactive fan experience starting June 10 on Independence Mall. The U.S. Open Experience at Independence Mall will feature interactive educational exhibits, an official U.S. Open merchandise store and other unique opportunities for fans in the Independence Visitor Center.

Don’t have tickets to the Open at Merion’s famed East Course? No problem. Stroll on down to Independence Mall that weekend (June 15-16) and watch it outdoors on the lawn. The USGA is putting up big screen TVs for fans to enjoy the live golf action, along with bleacher seating and interactive booths and simulated swings.

“Philadelphia’s fans hold a special place in their hearts for the game of golf and the U.S. Open, and this newly developed experience is meant to recognize that incredible passion and loyalty,” said Sarah Hirshland, USGA Senior Managing Director for Business Affairs. “We hope that in creating this downtown celebration we are providing fans with an opportunity to be a part of the spirit and excitement of the game’s finest championship.”

Goosen withdraws from Open

In related golf news, Retief Goosen has withdrawn from the U.S. Open Championship. Goosen, the 2001 and 2004 Open champion, is dealing with a back injury.

Goosen’s spot in the championship will be added to the qualifying spots available in the 11 sectional qualifying sites.
