Kathleen Turner launches cabaret career at Philadelphia Theatre Company

Star of movies, television and Broadway, Kathleen Turner, launched her cabaret career in Philadelphia last week with the Philadelphia Theatre Company through “Finding My Voice,” which took place at the Suzanne Roberts Theatre.

For one night only, Turner leant her signature deep voice to classics from the American songbook, accompanied by her band, led by Mark Janas.

“I worked with my director, Andy Gale and my musical director, Mark Janas and we all brought in songs and selected the ones that meant the most to me,” she says. “I love the intimacy [performing cabaret].  I love being able to really see and connect with an audience.  I like not having the barrier of the ‘fourth wall.’”

The audience sat at cafe tables for the special performances, with the set designed by Ed McCarthy.

And why did Turner choose to launch her cabaret career in Philadelphia?

“I created one of my favorite pieces, “Red Hot Patriot: The Kick Ass Witt of Molly Ivins  at the Philadelphia Theater Company and I wanted to find out if this format would work in a theater,” she reveals. “Paige Price, The Producing Artistic Director of The Philadelphia Theater Company, offered a partnership and I was delighted to launch my cabaret career from such a welcoming and supportive venue.”
