Kevin Kolb was sitting by himself Sunday evening when the phone rang. It was Eagles coach Andy Reid with a message: “Congratulations, you’re the starting quarterback for the Philadelphia Eagles.
About 15 minutes before word leaked to the press, Kolb learned that Donovan McNabb had been traded.
Now, it’s his job to achieve what his predecessor never could: win the franchise’s first Super Bowl title.
“That’s our number one goal,” Kolb said. “Of course, we want to win the division, it’s not been to win 10 games. It’s been to win the Super Bowl.”
Kolb becomes the leader of the one of the youngest teams in the league. With four years of NFL experience, 25-year-old Brent Celek is the elder statesman among the skill players. Kolb’s other targets are DeSean Jackson, age 23, and Jeremy Maclin, 21. Starting running back LeSean McCoy, 21, is in his second season.
Despite how it looks, both Kolb and the Eagles insist they aren’t rebuilding.
“They’re choosing to go in this direction for a reason, because they have confidence in our talents,” Kolb said. “We need to prove that on the field and be ready to win a lot of ball games and make a playoff run.”
