Man Dies After Schuylkill River Plunge in University City

A man died Saturday night after plunging into the Schuylkill River in University City.

Police and the Marine Unit pulled the man, an unidentified white male approximately 40 years of age, from the water shortly after he was seen in the river near Chestnut Street and Schuylkill Avenue at 6:37 p.m. Authorities estimate that he was only in the river for five to 10 minutes.

The man was taken to the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, where he was pronounced dead at 7:19 p.m. His identity has not yet been released.

The circumstances of his death are unclear.
