Man found fatally shot in West Philly

A passerby discovered the body of an 18-year-old man Monday afternoon in West Philadelphia.

Police said the man had a gunshot wound to his chest and another to his left side. He was found just before 2 p.m. in a vacant lot on the 4200 block of Fairmount Avenue in the Powelton neighborhood.

Medics pronounced him dead at the scene. Authorities did not release further details.

About 30 minutes later, a 46-year-old man was shot twice in the face and once in the chest at the busy corner of 5th Street and Lehigh Avenue in Fairhill, police said.

Officers rushed him to Temple University Hospital, where he was in critical condition.

Several people were also injured in shootings Sunday in Philadelphia, including a teenager who was wounded after shots rang out on a subway platform underneath City Hall.

When SEPTA officers arrived at the scene, just before 8 p.m., they found an 18-year-old man holding a gun on the Broad Street Line platform at City Hall, authorities said.

They ordered him to drop the weapon, and he did, and showed officers his gunshot wounds. Witnesses told the officers that another man had shot the 18-year-old, but he was able to wrestle the gun away from the shooter, who fled the scene.

Police said the man had been shot twice in the buttocks and lower groin area. He was transported to Jefferson University Hospital for treatment.

Three young men were hospitalized following a shooting just after 2:30 p.m. Sunday on the 2700 block of S. 65th Street in the Elmwood section of Southwest Philadelphia.

A 20-year-old man was shot in the chest and left leg; a 19-year-old man was shot in the left knee and buttocks; and the third victim, a 20-year-old man, sustained a graze wound to his back.

All were later listed in stable condition at Penn Presbyterian Medical Center, according to police.

In West Philadelphia, a 34-year-old man was shot once in the face at around 9:30 p.m. Wednesday inside a house on 50th Street just south of Market Street, police said. His injuries are not expected to be life-threatening.

Authorities said a 57-year-old man was injured by a knife-wielding suspect during an attempted robbery Sunday night in Center City.

The incident occurred at around 11:45 p.m. on the 200 block of S. 12th Street. Police said the victim received a slash wound to his right hand and was in stable condition at Jefferson University Hospital.

Four dead in suspected murder-suicide

Authorities in Chester County are investigating an apparent murder-suicide that left four people dead, including two children.

Police conducted a wellness check Sunday at the family’s house on the 100 block of Mountainview Road in West Whiteland Township after out-of-state relatives called and said they weren’t able to get in touch with family for several days.

Officers used a garage door opener from one of the family’s vehicles to access the house, and they discovered all four dead in the basement, investigators said.

“This is a tragedy beyond comprehension because two children and both their parents are dead,” Chester County District Attorney Deb Ryan said in a statement Monday. “We will do everything in our power to learn why this horrific incident happened.”

Authorities have not identified the family, and they haven’t said why they believe it to be a murder-suicide.

West Whiteland Township police said Monday that there is “no threat to the community at large.”
