March slots revenue sets Pa. record

Pennsylvania’s 11 casinos generated a record high $233 million from slot machines in March, the state gaming board announced Tuesday.

The slots revenue was up from the previous high of $218 million in July 2011 and 8.5 percent higher than March 2011. The figures include two nights of testing and one day of operation at the newly-opened Valley Forge Casino Resort. Even with the new casino, the average number of slot machines was down from a year ago, meaning the record month was likely a result of larger crowds.

Philadelphia’s lone casino, SugarHouse, experienced a 25 percent spike in slots revenue from a year ago, which accounted for the biggest increase in the state. SugarHouse’s $18.7 million ranked eighth overall, while Parx Casino in Bensalem once again paced the state’s gambling halls with $37 million.

The casinos generated $126 million in tax revenue for Pennsylvania. In most of the state the money will be used to lower property taxes, but Philadelphia residents will see a reduction in city wage taxes.
