Mason coming up big for Flyers

Steve Mason stopped 33-of-34 shots in the Flyers’ 2-1 win Tuesday night.

Mason winning early battle with Emery

Steve Mason is quietly emerging as the No. 1 goaltender for the Flyers.

While it’s too early to hand him the job, Mason got his second straight start Tuesday and came out a winner. He turned away 33-of-34 shots, including a short-handed breakaway in the second period, in a 2-1 victory.

“Part of the position is coming up big on key opportunities,” said Mason. “At the end of the first period, there were a couple saves there that needed to be made in order to preserve the lead.”

Mason improved to 1-2-0 with a .935 save percentage and 2.02 goals-against average in three starts. Ray Emery started the other game, a loss to Montreal, where he gave up four goals on 32 shots.

“He played a good game. He made some big saves when we needed them,” said new coach Craig Berube, of Mason. “He had composure in net. He looked real solid. He was on top of things. He saw all the pucks. He was just solid and looked big in net.”
