McNutt trying to live out his NFL dream with Birds

When the Eagles first drafted Marvin McNutt, the organization believed he could develop into a real red-zone threat. At 6-foot-3, he was born to run the fade route.

There was a logjam at receiver, though. And the Eagles waived McNutt after training camp. Then, after clearing waivers, the Eagles signed McNutt to the practice squad.

“It was an easy decision because I wanted to obviously be a part of the team,” McNutt said, when asked why he chose to return. “I went through all camp and knew the offense and wanted to just be a part of something here. It definitely hurt, but you keep fighting. These are the chances that you get if you keep continuing to work and never quit on your dream.”

That dream became reality Friday when McNutt was added to the 53-man roster. With injuries sweeping the locker room, the sixth-round pick out of Iowa is looking to make an impact in any way he can. While the Eagles chose not to dress him last night in Dallas, McNutt could very well see some playing time — most likely on special teams — before the season ends.

When a team is struggling as mightily as the Eagles, they tend to look toward the future. They’ll want to find out if the kid can play. But McNutt, who turned some heads in training camp, isn’t looking past the present.

“My thing is to do whatever I can to help the team,” McNutt said. “Whether it’s being in for one play or if it’s just even for moral support, but if they have me up in to play, my goal is to know what I’m doing and to do my job.”
