Adapting the lyrics and playing to a South Philly audience, legendary hip-hop artist Montell Jordan performed “This Is How We Do It” at half-time during the Sixers’ game against the Chicago Bulls Thursday night at the Wachovia Center.

Jordan spoke with Metro immediately after his performance and shared his thoughts on how the music industry has changed in the two decades since his iconic single came out.

“Hip-hop has definitely transformed. A lot of things are more computerized now,” said Jordan.

“People mix-master and sonically put albums together —it’s just different and I think right now you go through ebbs and flows. Sometimes music is really great and phenomenal and you get an Adele that comes and has the sensibilities and musicality that makes music awesome, but then you have some stuff that’s just kind of garbage.

“The good thing is though, the garbage has to come so that you can see what the good stuff is. So, from that standpoint, I think hip-hop has made some strides and some advances. And it’s just evolving right now.”

Jordan received a surprise guest appearance from Philly’s own Meek Mill, who showed up to tip his hat to the iconic music-maker, as did actor George Lopez, who was asked to host a charity event the Sixers were hosting. Both celebrities were seemingly in and out of the VIP reception room in a flash.

Jordan said that was his first time meeting Mill, who had been seated courtside.

“I was surprised, but it was super awesome. It was an honor to meet him,” he said.

The 76ers carried the lead against the Bulls until the very end of the fourth quarter, pushing the game into overtime and losing to the Bulls, 115-111.
