New initiative highlights South Street businesses

South Street is a destination any day of the week, but the energetic area has decided to take its offerings up a notch specifically on Thursdays.

Meet Me On South Street is a new initiative on the colorful avenue in the city, and every week dozens of local bars and restaurants will welcome visitors for special food and drink promotions. During the activation, Philadelphians can also check out rotating shopping and art experiences, which aim to highlight the area’s unique businesses.

“The idea of creating a campaign that is beneficial for both our business community and people coming to shop and visit is something we always strive for. This campaign intends to highlight the vibrant business community on and around South Street, with a specific focus on parts of our district that cannot be found anywhere else in the city,” explains Michael Harris, Executive Director of the South Street Headhouse District in a statement.

Located between Queen’s Village and Society Hill, the South Street Headhouse District ultimately spans 400 businesses, and it features some of the most foot-trafficked tourist destinations, including Philadelphia’s Magic Gardens and Historic Fabric Row. The SSHD, as a release states, also has a rich history that has revolved around providing public safety, sanitation, and other services in addition to the helpful services provided by the City of Philadelphia.

Meet Me On South Street comes at a time when the district is aiming to continue its goal to provide a safer, cleaner, well-managed business district for the benefit of the entire community. The South Street Headhouse District ultimately aims to “build an engaging and enticing place to work, visit, shop, invest, and live.”

This initiative is just one facet to that mission.

Any day of the week, the district aims to be an oasis of different cultural activations, but on Thursdays specifically, there will be food and drink deals from select bars and restaurants including Bridget Foy’s, Hale & True Cider Co. and Tattooed Mom. And as a release states, this campaign also focuses on South Street Headhouse District’s vibrant and multicultural business corridor through a constantly changing lens of weekly themes and specials from restaurants, retailers and more.

The first weekly activation was on Aug. 4 with “Makers and Artists Spaces” featuring Eye’s Gallery, Wallflower Paper & Party Shop, South Street Art Mart, Yowie and more. This Thursday, Aug. 11, will hail under the theme of “Treat Yourself” with specials from Moon + Arrow, Marsh + Mane, Passional Boutique & Sexploratorium and more.

For the remainder of August, themes will span “Nerdy” on Aug. 18 with Head House Books, Atomic City Comics, The Philly Game Shop, Queen & Rook Game Cafe and others offering specials. And then on Thursday, Aug. 25, the “Iconic South Street” activation will kick off with offerings from Tattooed Mom, Philly AIDS Thrift, Philadelphia’s Magic Gardens, Repo Records and many more on the docket.
