MLB’s Field of Dreams game between Yankees, White Sox back on for summer 2021

Major League Baseball announced on Monday afternoon that the New York Yankees and Chicago White Sox will play in its rescheduled Field of Dreams game in Dyersville, Iowa on Aug. 12.

The game was originally slated to be played on Aug. 13, 2020, between the two clubs but due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Yankees were replaced by the St. Louis Cardinals when MLB adopted a regional schedule during the tweaked 60-game schedule.

Just over a week before the game, MLB announced that it would not be possible to host the game this year, opening the door for the Yankees to get back on the headlining ticket in 2021.

Celebrating the iconic 1989 baseball movie, Field of Dreams, starring Kevin Costner (Ray Kinsella), James Earl Jones (Terrence Mann), and Ray Liotta (Shoeless Joe Jackson), this will be the first-ever MLB game held in the state of Iowa with an 8,000-seat stadium built adjacent to the original movie site.

The film was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Picture in 1990 and was selected to the National Film Registry of the Library of Congress in 2017.

The White Sox and Yankees were chosen to participate because they were the two favorite teams of Ray’s father, John Kinsella, at different points of his life, as explained in the film.

It remains to be seen if fans will be allowed to attend the game as the news of a COVID-19 vaccine remain promising.

“Plans will remain contingent upon the status of public health next summer, and the feasibility of ticket availability will be evaluated in the months ahead,” the league said in a statement.
