My Yearbook: Siblings strike gold on the Net

The Philadelphia region can now boast of having its own Mark Zuckerberg-style tech prodigies.

When Catherine and David Cook co-founded My Yearbook in 2005, the siblings were 15 and 16, respectively.

Earlier this month, the sister-brother duo sold the New Hope-headquartered company that claims 32 million members — young people between 13 and 24 — for nearly $100 million to Latino social network company, QuePasa.

“My brother and I founded myYearbook because we had just moved to a new high school and it was hard for us to make new friends. We thought that the website would help us meet new people,” Catherine Cook, now 21, said in an interview with Metro.

Their old brother Geoff, who was familiar with Facebook from his Harvard Alumni magazine, kicked in the initial investment of $250,000 and became CEO of the company. The Cooks, who were not initially adept at programming, would stay up late at night to communicate with their development team in Mumbai, India, while attending high school.

The company will continued to employ 85 employees in New Hope and 15 in Manhattan.
