Neshaminy teachers strike for second time in six months

Teachers in the Neshaminy School District hit the picket lines for the second time in six months today, closing classes for 7,000 students and postponing final exams for seniors.

The teachers have worked without a contract for four years since the previous pact expired in July 2008. Despite 39 bargaining sessions and a recent non-binding arbitration, the two sides remain far apart on raises, back pay, health care contributions, according to reports.

The work stoppage could extend the school year to as late as June 29, but the district still expects to have graduation on June 13, reports said. Teachers also went on an eight-day strike in January.

The teachers union said the district is not willing to compromise, while the district claims it cannot afford to meet the union halfway because it is already facing a $5.5 million shortfall for next year that will result in program reductions.
