The Philadelphia Police Foundation and the City of Philadelphia have agreed to build a $1.2 million home for the Police Mounted Unit, which was previously housed in rented space outside of the city.
The Philadelphia Police Foundation is raising funds for the construction through its “Pony Up for the Mounted Unit” campaign that asks businesses, corporations and the public to help support the new barn facility, which is not included in the city budget. Some Philadelphia labor unions will also contribute pro bono building services.
The Philadelphia Police Department’s Mounted Patrol Unit was reinstated last November after a six-year hiatus. Police say it is especially effective in controlling crowds during large events or gatherings and patrolling Fairmount Park.
Tomorrow, Mayor Michael Nutter, Jeff Kolansky of the Philadelphia Police Foundation, Commissioner Charles Ramsey and State Senator Larry Farnese will hold a ceremony to announce more details about the new facility and Harry Martin of Verizon Wireless will present a $10,000 check towards the stable.
