NFL free agent frenzy: Monster moves reshape NFL on league new year

The players that the Eagles did not sign are almost as interesting a story moving forward this offseason than who they actually did sign.

Of course, everyone knows Phillywas hamstrung by having the third least cap room of all 32 NFL teams, but a big shift in talent did occur Thursday afternoon.

And, in addition to the moves listed below, several others are slowly in the works — like a new home for Tony Romo and scheduled visits by Eddie Lacy, Adrian Peterson and Jamaal Charles.

Here are the moves you need to know about and how they affect the Eagles:

DeSean Jackson signs with Buccaneers

There is no bigger name for Eagles fans than DeSean Jackson (three years, $35 million with $20 million guaranteed), and the speedy wideout took his talents to southwest Florida when it was leaked that he was heading to the Bucs. He’ll become part of a Mike Evans tandem that will surely make things difficult for opposing secondaries. He’ll also make Tampa quarterback Jameis Winston a very happy man.

Texans trade Brock Osweiler, second rounder to Browns

In one of the more shocking pieces of news Thursday, Cleveland continued its spending spree acquiring the highly-paid former Houston quarterback and a 2018 second round draft pick, leaving the Texans in need of a new quarterback. In the Sam Hinkie-esque move, the Texans sent Osweiler and two draft picks in exchange for a fourth rounder from Cleveland — essentially a salary dump. NFL pundits expect Osweiler to be cut.

Jaguars sign A.J. Bouye and Calais Campbell

The Eagles were reportedly in on former Texans cornerback A.J. Buoy as late as Thursday morning, but the 25-year-old no doubt wanted more money than the Eagles could provide and he stayed in the AFC South. The Jags also struck a deal with big defensive tackle Campbell.

​Patriots sign Stephon Gilmore

The rich get richer. With the Eagles desperate for help at cornerback, the Patriots were able to land one of free agency’s biggest prizes in former Bills lockdown corner Gilmore for $65 million over four seasons with $40 million guaranteed. The Pats were also able to add tight end Dwayne Allen via trade earlier this week and look like they are going to be able to keep many of their own free agents.

Bears cut Jay Cutler, sign Mike Glennon

Chicago is changing gears, taking a chance on promising longtime backup Glennon while moving on from Cutler, who has been with the Bears for eight seasons.
