NFL Rumors: Eagles could try and sign Darrelle Revis

The Eagles still have cornerback issues.

After an offseason that saw the team add offensive weapons left and right for up-and-coming quarterback Carson Wentz, the Birds starting cornerbacks if the season started today would be Patrick Robinson and Ron Brooks, with youngsters Jalen Mills, C.J. Smith and Rasul Douglas rotating in off the bench.

Even after drafting injured cornerback Sidney Jones — projected as a first rounder before getting hurt — the team has few short-term certainties at cornerback and it’s showing in practice.

The passing game has torn apart the secondary in the early going, leading many to pontificate on whether the current roster offers enough for the team heading into the season. Writers like ESPN’s Tim McManus say they wouldn’t be surprised if the Eagles added a veteran before breaking from training camp.

Enter Darrelle Revis.

Likely a future hall of famer, Revis was cut by the Jets and has yet to sign with a team this year — which would be his age 32 season. Can he still play cornerback in the NFL? His play on the field in 2016 led many to believe he couldn’t, with most Jets fans speculating he might shift to safety before the team announced his release.

Being 32 certainly doesn’t disqualify a player from being effective in the NFL, but clearly 32 NFL teams have seen no reason to take a risk. But the risk is pretty minimal.

As per his contract with the Jets, he is being paid $6 million this season and would essentially be playing for free for any team taking the chance in 2017. According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, Revis is “putting himself in position that if they are able to strike a deal with some team, he’ll be ready to go.”

Rapoport went on to say that there is buzz connecting the Eagles to Revis, but the interest right now is “minimal.”

If the cornerbacks don’t pick things up in training camp, that could change in a flash.
