NJ police dog Schultz given officer’s farewell

Schultz was like any other cop. He lived and breathed fighting crime, according to officials with the Gloucester Township, N.J., police department.

That’s why the department mourned the trained police dog’s death in the line of duty like they would any other member of the Camden County town’s force.

“We think very highly of our K-9s. They are members of our department,” police Chief Harry Earle said yesterday. “During the apprehension, the suspect threw the dog into traffic. When you hear that, it makes it even more tragic.”

Schultz was chasing two alleged robbers of a Chinese restaurant on Route 42 when one of the suspects threw the dog into the highway. Two Washington Township men, including a former high school football star at Washington High School, have been charged with the robbery.

Schultz’ partner, Cpl. Mark Pickard, was not available for comment yesterday. A full honor guard procession for the 3.5-year-old German Shepherd happened late Tuesday night.
