On Feb. 4, officials at Villanova University announced that unidentified employees of its law school had misrepresented the grade-point averages and admissions-test scores of its students to the American Bar Association. The misreporting took place for several years, through 2009.
John Gotanda, who became dean on Jan. 1, said that a law-school committee had informed him of the inaccuracies on Jan. 20. An internal investigation began immediately and an external law firm will conduct an audit.
The ABA uses GPAs and test scores to rank law schools. Other organizations that rank schools, such as the influential U.S. News & World Report, use the data as well.
Gotanda says that the data reported in 2010 was correct.
