Now arriving in the SEPTA station: Wi-Fi

There’s a new feature available to SEPTA Regional Rail passengers in Center City: free wireless Internet.

SEPTA has partnered with Comcast to offer high-speed service to all passengers with laptops or other wireless devices on the station level or platform at Suburban Station and Market East Station. Riders do not have to be a Comcast subscriber to access the signal.

“Comcast approached SEPTA and asked if it was possible to install wireless equipment and provide wireless access to Comcast customers,” said Bill Zebrowski, SEPTA’s senior director of information technology. “SEPTA agreed, but only if Comcast would provide wireless access to all SEPTA passengers and patrons in those locations in Market East and Suburban Station for no charge.”

By the end of a three-month trial period, Zebrowski said SEPTA hopes the service will be available at University City, 30th Street and Temple University stations. The agency will also entertain proposals from other providers who want to hop aboard.

More than 38,000 daily passengers board the train at those two stations. There are no concrete plans to expand the service to other modes, Zebrowski said.

“We saw this as an excellent way to provide enhanced customer service for all SEPTA customers and to pilot the service,” Zebrowski said.
