Parents guilty in son’s death

Herbert and Catherine Schaible were found guilty of involuntary manslaughter and child endangerment after a jury was able to reach a verdict in a “faith healing” case centered on the 2009 death of their son Kent.

Kent Schaible died of bacterial pneumonia after being sick for up to two weeks during which his parents chose prayer over seeking medical attention. At trial, a social worker testified that Herbert said he and his family — they have six other children — don’t go to the doctors or take medicine.

The Schaibles didn’t testify, but their defense attorneys maintained they didn’t know Kent was deathly ill. They will be sentenced Feb. 2. They could get more than a decade in prison.
