Philadelphia issues ‘code red’ alert for air quality

Philadelphia health officials issued a “code red” alert, indicating that the city’s air is unhealthy to breath due to ongoing wildfires in Canada.

Residents may experience adverse health effects, and more serious complications are possible for those with underlying medical conditions, according to the city’s Department of Public Health.

Mayor Jim Kenney’s administration is recommending organizations and individuals cancel all outdoor events. Residents are encouraged to stay inside if possible and wear an N-95 or KN-95 mask outdoors. People should close all windows and doors in their home and use fans to keep air circulating, officials said.

Anyone who experiences trouble breathing, nausea or dizziness should seek medical attention as soon as possible, the health department advised.
