Phillies lose, Cole Hamels out

The precautionary MRI on Cole Hamels’ left shoulder obviously showed enough to warrant concern.

The ace lefty will miss his next scheduled start (which had been Friday against Washington), but Hamels won’t be placed on the disabled list. He will throw a bullpen in two days and then make the start after that. This is just precautionary, according to Hamels.

“Missing one start I don’t think is the end of the world,” he told reporters. “I’m throwing tomorrow, then getting back on my five-day schedule.”

Hamels had some inflammation following his start last Friday against the Nationals. He lasted just five innings.

Speaking of the Phillies …

They fell just short on Harry Kalas night, dropping a 3-2 decision to the Diamondbacks in the ninth inning when Lyle Overbay lined a two-run double off Roy Halladay.

Halladay, who was going for his league-leading 16th win, gave up back-to-back singles to start the ninth, before taking his fifth loss. Halladay (15-5) still tied a career-high with 14 strikeouts and pitched his seventh complete game this season.

The Phillies got their two runs thanks to Shane Victorino‘s fifth-inning home run, which also plated Jimmy Rollins. There were 45,742 fans in attendance at Citizens Bank Park.
