There was a possibility that the Rockies were going to be a tonic for the struggling Phillies. The Phillies played well during its last road trip in Colorado. However, the season has hit its nadir. The Phillies have lost seven straight games. The Rockies, who beat the Phillies 4-1 Sunday afternoon, swept a series in Philadelphia for the first time in franchise history.

None of the three games against the team with the fifth worst record in the league were particularly close. The Rockies beat the Phillies best pitchers, Cole Hamels and Aaron Harang, and had no problem with Jerome Williams Sunday.

WIlliams, who lasted just five innings, gave up a pair of two-run homers. That’s much more than the Phillies moribund offense could generate.

“We fell behind early and were unable to do anything on the offensive side,” Ryne Sandberg said. “We just struggled with the bats.”

That sums it up during the Phillies latest terrible patch of baseball. The Phillies were 0-23 with runners in scoring position until Odubel Herrera singled in the seventh, which loaded the bases with nobody out. However, the Phillies failed to score. Ben Revere struck out to end the ending. It was emblematicof the Phillies season as a whole.

“It’s frustrating,” Revere said. “But you’ve got to move forward.”

The Phillies have made little progress this season. The team has lost 33 games before playing a minute of June baseball.

“The only way is to go up from here,” Revere said. “We’ve got to forget about things and move on. We’re a young team. We’ve got to learn from all of this and get better.”

After Monday’s day off for the Phillies Phestival, an annual event to raise money for Phillies charities, the Phils are back in action with three games at home against the Reds.

Tuesday will pit journeyman Sean O’Sullivan against Cincinnati’sJohnny Cueto, who ismakinghis first start since May 19 after missing one start with right elbow stiffness. Cueto said “every single pitch was good” during a bullpen session on Sunday.

Wednesday will see Cole Hamels on the hill facing Mike Leake. Hamels was stellar during his most recent start, a loss to the Rockies Friday, but the Philadelphia offense couldn’t life him to a win after he gave up a pair of solo homers.

Thursday, another night game (all three games start at 7:05 p.m. and air on CSN) has it’s pitching matchup to be determined.
