Phillies take a risk at No. 1 overall in high school outfielder Mickey Moniak

The Phillies took a risk Thursday.

With the top overall pick in the MLB draft, Philadelphia took 18-year-old high schoolerMickey Moniak.

Hailing from San Diego, the Phillies turned away from A.J. Puk, the 6-foot-7 lefty from Florida and decided to try and address their biggest weaknesses, offense and the outfield.

However by the time the teenager is able to make it to the majors, they may have other weaknesses.

Regardless, it was the first time since 2010, when Bryce Harper was picked first overall by the Nationals that a high school outfielder was picked first overall.

“Collectively, we believe Mickey was the best player available in the draft,” Almaraz said. “He’s a true center fielder with incredible offensive ability and the potential to be a perennial All-Star.”

Clearly impressing scouts with his hitting, the 6-foot-2 and 180 outfielder is committed to attend UCLA in the fall — but is expected to sign with the Phillies and go pro.

Last year he hit.476 with 12 triples and seven homers and 40 runs scored. In four varsity seasons, he hit .390 with 105 RBI and 105 runs scored.

Moniak was the Gatorade California Baseball Player of the Year and has won a bevy of other designations. He also has won gold metals on theUSA Baseball’s 15U and 18U National teams.
