Phillies trade Carlos Ruiz to Dodgers

Once again, the Phillies have sent a beloved world champion to the Los Angeles Dodgers. The team announced Thursday, after Carlos Ruiz had passed through waivers, that he had been sent out west and reunited with Chase Utley.

In return, Philly acquired veteran catcher A.J. Ellis, right-hander Tommy Bergjans and a player to be named later.

In more than one decade playing in red pinstripes, Ruiz was a part of the 2008 World Series winning squad, caught three no-hitters, and was renowned for his ability to handle a pitching staff.

Ruiz, 37, posted a .266 average with 213 doubles, seven triples, 68 home runs and 401 RBI in 1,069 games between 2006-2016 while making eight opening day starts.

Bergjans is 23-years-old, and in single-A. He has high upside but it ERA above 4.00 thus far in the minors.

Ellis is a nine year veteran and will split catching duties with Cameron Rupp. Like Ruiz, he is a very good defensive catcher and has a good report with pictures.
