Philly ‘Buzz Off’ event calls for head shaving for charity

It’s only hair, right?

One Mission, a children’s cancer support foundation, is hosting its inaugural “Buzz Off” event in Philadelphia Sunday, May 15, where hundreds of men, women and young people will be losing their locks in the name of charity.

Eagles tight end Brent Celek has agreed to shave his head, too.

The event will be held from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Lincoln Financial Field. Shaving begins at 10:15 a.m.

It’s all free and open to the public and all proceeds directly benefit kids and families fighting cancer at the Nemours Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders in Delaware, Pennsylvania and New Jersey.

The hair will be donated to kids fighting cancer in an effort to make the healing and recovery process more tolerable and life more livable during cancer treatment and hospitalization.

Nadine Gill, of Millville, N.J., is 50, and shaving her head in memory of her nephew, Mark Russell Shook, Jr., who died of cancer.

“When I was 16 years old, my nephew died from cancer,” said Gill.

“He was 5 years old. I now live with seven grandchildren and I would hope they will never suffer from this disease. I want to support all the children and families who do deal with cancer. It’s only my hair. I can give it up if it enables children to have something a bit easier. When I heard about the Buzz Off event on the radio, driving to work, I knew I would do it.”
