Philly Fights Cancer: Round 3 to feature John Legend and more

On Saturday, Oct. 28, Philly Fights Cancer: Round 3 comes to the Philadelphia Navy Yard, featuring performances from John Legend and the 9-time Grammy Award-winning group Earth, Wind and Fire. Whoopi Goldberg will host the event as Mistress of Ceremonies.

Now in its third year, Philly Fights Cancer has raised $9.1 million since its inception in 2015, with funds benefiting Penn Medicine’s Abramson Cancer Center. Its purpose is to raise awareness about the Abramson Cancer Center as well as to raise funds for the groundbreaking research being done there. Past performers include Carole King, Jim Gaffigan, Lionel Richie and Jennifer Hudson.

“Our hope is that, once again, Philadelphia and the Abramson Cancer Center take the spotlight to shine light on the work being done in our city to treat and cure cancer,” says Nancy Abramson-Wolfson, Chair of Philly Fights Cancer.  “We want people to leave having learned more about the center, and inspired to stay involved through philanthropy that keeps these clinical trials funded.”

According to Abramson-Wolfson, the money raised so far has helped fund 20 new clinical trials for 806 patients and even had a hand in the FDA-approval of a new treatment.

“This year, Carl June MD, who has been with Penn Medicine for over 20 years, spearheaded research that led to a historic FDA-approval of a new treatment called CAR-T therapy,” she says. “It’s a medical breakthrough that has the possibility to help patients across the world, and it wouldn’t have been possible without clinical trials. That’s why we passionately continue to fundraise for this cause.”
