Phils GM shoots down Upton-for-Lee rumors

The first bombshell rumor involving the Phillies fell Tuesday when a report claimed they were discussing a Cliff Lee for Justin Upton swap.

The report, filed by ESPN’s Pedro Gomez, stated that the Phils would acquire the 25-year-old right fielder in exchange for Lee, cash considerations and prospects. However, GM Ruben Amaro, Jr. shot down the proposed deal.

“I don’t comment on rumors, but that one is absolutely and unequivocally false,” Amaro told reporters at the Winter Meetings.

Amaro has repeatedly said that the Phils are interested in adding a center fielder first. Problem is, there aren’t many left. With B.J. Upton, Angel Pagan and Shane Victorino off the market, the Phils are basically down to Michael Bourn (free agent) or Josh Hamilton (free agent) — unless they pursue the Rockies’ Dexter Fowler in a trade.
