Police: Robbery suspect fatally shot by customer

A customer shot and killed a man who was trying to rob a chicken restaurant Sunday night in Northeast Philadelphia, authorities said.

The shooting occurred at around 10:15 p.m. inside the Wingstop at 2118 Cottman Ave., according to police.

Investigators said a 53-year-old gunman was holding up the store when a 27-year-old man walked through the doors. The robber pointed the gun at the man, who pulled out a firearm and shot him in the neck, police said.

Officers arrived soon after, and medics pronounced the 53-year-old man dead at the scene. Police recovered both guns involved in the incident.

Authorities said the shooter had a valid permit to carry, and he was taken to Northeast Detectives for questioning. There was no word Monday afternoon on whether any charges would be filed.

Elsewhere in the city, eight people were hospitalized after being shot Sunday night and early Monday.

In Kensington, two men and a teenage boy were wounded after shots rang out at around 10:15 a.m. Monday on the 3100 block of Kensington Avenue.

A 30-year-old man was shot in the chest and right arm, and a 20-year-old man was hit twice in the lower back, police said. The boy, 16, was shot in the right ankle.

All three were in stable condition at Temple University Hospital following the shooting.

Officers rushed a 19-year-old man to the hospital after he was shot multiple times just before 11 p.m. Sunday on the 5000 block of Rising Sun Avenue in Olney, authorities said.

The victim, who received several wounds to his torso, was in critical condition at Einstein Medical Center, according to police.

Investigators were called to Jefferson Frankford Hospital at 9:30 p.m. Sunday after a 37-year-old man arrived with a gunshot wound to his right arm.

He told police he was sitting inside a black Buick on the 2900 block of Ella Street in Kensington when a man opened fire.

The victim drove himself to the hospital, and his injuries are not expected to be life-threatening, authorities said.

Detectives were investigating Sunday night after a 21-year-old man was found with a gunshot wound to the head just before 8:45 p.m. Sunday on the 2800 block of Marston Street in North Philadelphia.

He was in critical condition at Temple Hospital, and investigators were still working Monday to determine the location of the shooting.

Meanwhile, in West Philadelphia, another 21-year-old was shot in both knees just after 8:30 p.m. Sunday on the 4000 block of Wallace Street in the Mantua neighborhood, authorities said.

He showed up to Penn Presbyterian Medical Center in a private vehicle, and detectives held that car and interviewed the driver.

The victim is in stable condition, according to police.

Less than half-hour before, a 19-year-old man was shot twice in the left leg and once in the buttocks on the 1500 block of N. 58th Street, also in West Philadelphia. He was listed in critical condition at Penn Presbyterian.

A woman was stabbed during a robbery Sunday night near Temple’s main campus in North Philadelphia.

She was stabbed in the left leg just after 7 p.m. near the corner of 16th and Berks streets, authorities said. Her injuries are not life-threatening.

Police reported no arrests in connection with any of the incidents.
