Delaware State Police arrested a counselor at a state-run short-term residential facility today for emotionally troubled youths for allegedly assaulting a 12-year-old patient.
Stephen Stockton, 37, of Wilmington, allegedly became involved in a fight with the boy inside the gymnasium of Terry Children’s Psychiatric Center in New Castle on May 5. Delaware State Police said in a release that they began investigating the incident on May 16 and found the 12-year-old became agitated after a family visit.
While trying to restrain the child, Stockton allegedly grabbed the child by his shoulder and kicked his feet out from under him, knocking him tot he gym floor. Police said that when the boy was able to stand up and took a swing at Stockton, the man picked the boy up and again slammed him to the floor.
The child received minor injuries to his upper body and face. He was treated by medical staff at the center.
Stockton was charged today with assault and offensive touching. He was arraigned and released with a no contact order with the victim.
