OLD CITY – The $12 million exhuming and re-creation of the country’s first home to sitting presidents opens today at Independence Mall.
The aptly named “President’s House” was residence to Presidents George Washington and John Adams, but the new tourist destination next to the Liberty Bell focuses on the full-time inhabitants of the executive mansion — nine slaves who served under Washington.
A decade in planning and implementation, the resulting space gives voice to once-unheard individuals and is made even more powerful by its proximity to the Liberty Bell and Independence Hall, officials said.
