A 14-year veteran Voorhees Township officer was charged yesterday for allegedly using a state police motor vehicle database to look up personal information about a female motorist, then attempting to friend her on Facebook, according to a report from The Gloucester County Times.
Jeffrey Tyther, 44, was charged with computer theft and violating the motor vehicle record law and released after being issued a summons. He is suspended without pay.
Prosecutors reportedly said Tyther was on duty in a marked car when he saw a woman pass him on Sept 9, pulled up next to her and waved. Though Tyther did not stop or ticket the driver, he allegedly used her license plate number to look up her person information on a state police motor vehicle database, whose use is limited to criminal investigations, and found her on Facebook.
Tyther sent the woman a friend request days after the encounter. When she didn’t respond, he allegedly sent her an email letting her know he was the officer who had stopped and waved at her.
One of the woman’s co-workers then contacted police, according to the report.
