PSPCA: 33 dogs taken from homes

Local animal welfare workers removed 33 dogs from two homes Thursday after cops stumbled upon the unofficial, illegal kennel while investigating a narcotics claim.

Wendy Marano of the Pennsylvania Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals said the canines were removed around 1:30 p.m. from two homes on the 2000 block of East Victoria Street — 23 from one property and 10 from the second.

“Conditions were horrendous,” Marano said. “A lot of the dogs were being kept in the basements — some in very small animal containers — and they couldn’t get around. They were filthy, with urine and feces everywhere.”

Police discovered the dogs when they were at the properties during a narcotics investigation. Most of them are Pomeranians and Chihuahuas.

What will happen

Marano said that some of the animals will be taken back to the PSPCA shelter and some will be surrendered for evidence. It is unclear what charges will be filed.
